Minibus Driver - Sutton Lodge Day Centre

Volunteer as a minibus driver to bring residents to Sutton Lodge, where they can enjoy a hot meal, social activities, and company—opportunities they couldn’t access without your help. You will need a D1 driving license (unless you gained your driving license before 1997).

About the Organisation

Sutton Lodge Day Centre provides a welcoming environment for over-60s, offering hot meals and activities. The centre promotes friendship and social connection, especially for those living alone. Additionally, Sutton Lodge runs the Meals on Wheels service for the borough in partnership with Sutton Council.

What you will be doing

Most of our members depend entirely on our minibus service to attend the Centre. We need a team of volunteer drivers to cover morning and afternoon slots, five days a week.

Morning runs involve assisting residents from their front door into the minibus, and in the afternoon, helping them back home. Both minibuses are wheelchair accessible and equipped with a tail lift for those unable to manage the steps.

Some light manual handling may be required, but full training will be provided to ensure you feel confident and safe.

What's in it for you?

  • Training and support on all aspects of the role, including safeguarding awareness.
  • Working in a team with friendly, happy people.
  • The satisfaction of knowing that you helped someone who otherwise might be socially isolated.
  • Getting out and about in the borough.

What skills will you need?

No special qualifications are needed—just the right driving license credentials and a willingness to help! Ideal volunteers are:

  • Safe and confident drivers with a minimum of 2 years' driving experience and no more than 3 points on your licence.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Patient, friendly, and caring.
  • Comfortable assisting passengers with mobility needs (training provided).
  • Happy to work as part of a team.

Age range: minimum age 21 years.

Minibus drivers must hold a D1 driving license if you got your driving licence after 1 January 1997.

DBS check required (which will be organised and paid for by Sutton Lodge Day Centre).

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment:

We are looking for a pool of volunteers to build a flexible rota, to cover both our morning routes (9.30-11am) and afternoon routes (2.30-4pm), Monday-Friday five days a week.

Location:

Sutton Lodge Day Centre, 139 Brighton Rd, Sutton, SM2 5SW but with routes around the borough.
