English Language Teaching Assistant - weekly - Refugee & Migrant Network Sutton (RMNS)

We are looking for Volunteer Teaching Assistants to support our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for adult learners from refugee and migrant backgrounds. You will work alongside an experienced ESOL teacher to help create a welcoming and supportive learning environment for students developing their English language skills.

About the Organisation

Refugee & Migrant Network Sutton (RMNS) offers friendship, advice and free ESOL classes to refugees, asylum seekers and newly settled migrants in the London Borough of Sutton.

What you will be doing

Over 120 adults attend our free English language classes with levels ranging from beginners to ESOL level 3 (equivalent). These are informal lessons without an examination focus. As an English Language Teaching Assistant, you will be:

  • Supporting the ESOL teacher during weekly classes for adult refugee and migrant learners.
  • Assisting individuals or small groups with speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities.
  • Encouraging learners to participate and build confidence in using English.
  • Explaining tasks using clear and simple English.
  • Helping to prepare learning materials and maintain a welcoming classroom environment.

What's in it for you?

  • Make a positive difference by helping learners improve their confidence and independence.
  • Gain experience supporting adult learners from refugee and migrant communities and relevant to careers in education, ESOL, or community work.
  • Develop communication, teaching support, and interpersonal skills.

"I have every admiration for adults of any age taking on a new language as it’s a huge task and it is so rewarding to see how much progress they make in just a term with our support before they move on to the next class." Cathy Baker, RMNS volunteer

What skills will you need?

  • Patience, friendliness, and good communication skills.
  • Confidence using clear and simple English.
  • An interest in supporting people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Reliability and the ability to work well as part of a team.
