Befriender/Peer supporter at Community Allotment - EcoLocal

Join our Community Food Growing Project as a volunteer Befriender! Help participants engage with activities, make friends, and feel supported while enjoying gardening, fresh air, and a welcoming community. Everyone is welcome, no experience needed.

About the Organisation

EcoLocal is an independent charity that acts as a hub for community-led projects, events and activities. Our aim is to "achieve strong, vibrant communities in a healthy environment".

What you will be doing

Our Community Food Growing Project offers a variety of activities, including food growing, organic gardening, wildlife and biodiversity work, and herb and fruit cultivation. We are looking for volunteers to support participants during our supported sessions, working alongside our staff.

Key Tasks:

  • Support participants to fully engage and enjoy the sessions. This includes chatting while they work, encouraging participation, gardening alongside them, helping with simple tasks, and ensuring they take breaks and enjoy refreshments.

  • Assist staff in keeping the allotment running smoothly, such as tidying up and putting away tools at the end of sessions.

  • Optionally, get involved with food growing, gardening, or creative projects, depending on your interests and experience.

No prior experience is required—just enthusiasm, a friendly approach, and a willingness to help others enjoy the allotment.

What's in it for you?

  • Spend time outdoors and enjoy a peaceful, green environment.

  • Take home fresh, seasonal vegetables.

  • Be part of a friendly, supportive team and see the results of your work.

  • Experience the satisfaction of helping others engage and grow through volunteering.

What skills will you need?

We welcome volunteers who enjoy supporting others, are interested in community projects, and are happy working outdoors. Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner are important, as you’ll be engaging with people of all abilities and backgrounds.

Some participants may need extra support due to learning difficulties or mild mental health challenges, so patience and a willingness to spend time communicating are essential. While gardening experience is a bonus, it’s not required—our staff will guide you on tasks. No formal qualifications are needed.

What's the time commitment and where?
