'Gear-Up' Accessible Cycling Project Befriender/Peer Supporter - EcoLocal

Be part of our friendly accessible cycling team! Help participants, including those with additional needs, enjoy inclusive sessions—chat, support, and cycle alongside them, ensuring everyone has fun, feels confident, and stays safe.

About the Organisation

EcoLocal is an independent charity that acts as a hub for community-led projects, events and activities. Our aim is to "achieve strong, vibrant communities in a healthy environment".

What you will be doing

Our Gear-Up accessible cycling sessions give people the chance to enjoy outdoor exercise, get out of the house, and meet others in a friendly, supportive environment.

We are looking for volunteers to help create a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll support our cycle instructors by:

  • Greeting participants and introducing them to instructors as needed.
  • Chatting and befriending attendees, including those with additional support needs.
  • Cycling alongside participants on bikes or side-by-side cycles.
  • Ensuring everyone is happy, engaged, and enjoying the session.

You can also request instructors’ assistance for participants who need help adjusting bikes or getting on safely. Volunteers help make these sessions enjoyable, inclusive, and accessible for all.

What's in it for you?

You will:

  • Gain experience of working with people who have additional support needs.
  • Improve your communication skills.
  • Have fun and get outdoor exercise.

What skills will you need?

You need to be a very good verbal communicator, and have an interest in working with people from all backgrounds and ages including those with disabilities and learning difficulties. Outgoing personality. Friendly. Ability to cycle not crucial, as our side-by-side bikes and trikes can by ridden by anybody even if you can't balance on two wheels!

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment:

Our Gear-Up accessible cycling sessions run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am - 12pm so you can pick and choose when you want to volunteer.

Location:

David Weir Leisure Centre, Middleton Road, Carshalton, Surrey SM5 1SL
