Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Leadership Team member - 1st Cheam Scout Group

Help 1st Cheam Scouts reach 100! Join one of our leadership teams for either Beavers, Cubs or Scouts and help make a real difference to your community by helping to provide a wide range of activities at our weekly meetings and other outdoor activities for boys and girls in the age ranges of 6 to 14.5 years. This is a great evening/term time volunteering opportunity.

About the Organisation

Founded in 1928, 1st Cheam Scouts is one of Sutton’s longest running uniformed groups, giving young people exciting activities, outdoor adventures, new friendships and skills for life to thrive together.

What you will be doing

1st Cheam Scouts is a progressive ‘go ahead’ Scout Group offering a wide range of activities at our weekly meetings and other outdoor activities for boys and girls in the age ranges of 6 to 14.5 years. We urgently need more adult volunteers to keep running and so we're looking for adult volunteers to become leadership team members with one of our sections:

  • Beavers (6-8 years) Mondays 5.30pm – 6.45pm
  • Cubs (8-10.5 years) Thursdays 6.45pm – 8.15pm
  • Scouts (10.5-14.5 years) Tuesdays 7.15pm – 9.15pm
As a Leadership Team Member this is a great opportunity for you to use your creative and motivational skills and with others, plan and deliver a balanced programme of fun activities and brilliant opportunities to our young people. Programmes range by age group from basic games and craft activities, to more adventurous programmes for our older age groups through to weekends and trips away including (for example), camping, canoeing and canal boating. Using your skills, you can, with others, help shape the future of young people in our community.

What's in it for you?

"Being involved in Scouting has been one of the best things I have ever done. As a volunteer it's great fun and working with the leadership team as well as our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts has been hugely rewarding. Just to see the fun they are having and hear their laughter and share their joy is a reward in itself. Providing the next generation with skills, knowledge, opportunities and friendships is one of the very best contributions that we, as adults, can make to the next generation.”

What skills will you need?

Previous experience is not required but we will of course be delighted to hear from any of our former Group members, ex Scouts and Cubs or anybody with experience of working with young people. Ideal skills and attributes include:

  • Planning and organising activities
  • Leadership and motivating young people
  • Teamwork and collaboration with other adults
  • Communication and enthusiasm
  • Commitment to supporting youth development

Volunteers must be 18+ and be prepared to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment:

Our weekly meetings during school term times are about 2 hours each week with some preparation required when leading a particular programme. The day and time depends on which section you volunteer with:

  • Beavers (6-8 years) Mondays 5.30pm – 6.45pm
  • Cubs (8-10.5 years) Thursdays 6.45pm – 8.15pm
  • Scouts (10.5-14.5 years) Tuesdays 7.15pm – 9.15pm

The older sections i.e. Cubs and Scouts, also run activities outside the weekly meetings on occasion.

We're all volunteers, so very flexible, and appreiate all contributions from our fellow Leadership Team Members.

Role Address:
