Mentor A Young Person In Sutton - MAPS Mentoring (Volunteer Centre Sutton)

MAPS (Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support) is an early intervention 1-2-1 mentoring programme, run by Volunteer Centre Sutton, working with local children and young people who are facing challenging circumstances or have complex needs. Under the MAPS Mentoring project, Mentors provide each young person on the programme with a safe space and dedicated time to talk, as well as an opportunity to expand their horizons.

About the Organisation

MAPS Mentoring is an award-winning programme supporting children and young people aged 8-25 to explore their potential through the support of a Volunteer Mentor.

What you will be doing

Some young people in Sutton have complex needs and are facing many difficult issues in their daily lives, such as low self-esteem, social isolation, challenging family relationships, abuse, loss or bereavement, poverty or self-harm...Could you be that person they talk to?Do you have a couple of hours a week in which you could meet with a young person to listen or engage them in a positive activity?

You will receive free comprehensive training that will not only support you in your role as a Mentor, but provide transferable skills that will support you in many aspects of life. You will gain new skills based around communication, listening and personal awareness, as well as gaining a better understanding of the lives of young people and your community. You will benefit from regular supervision from a dedicated Practitioner, have the opportunity to participate in additional training sessions to further enhance your knowledge and skills and become part of a community working to improve the lives of Sutton’s young people. You will have the opportunity to try exciting and fun activities with your young person and will know that you have helped to change a young life for the better.

What skills will you need?

No specific skills needed – just an interest in supporting a young person!

What are we looking for? No qualifications are needed for this role. We are looking for volunteers who have a positive attitude towards children and young people and a desire to help them explore their potential. We are looking for a positive role model, patient, calm, a good listener and who is non-judgemental.

What's the time commitment and where? 

Around 2 hours per week (with options to extend) for up to 12 months a mutually convenient time.

Location: Mentoring takes place in the community throughout the London Borough of Sutton.
