Southern Oaks is an independent, not-for-profit charity providing a range of independent and supported living at a choice of locations in North-East Surrey.

What you will be doing

As a Volunteer Befriender, you’ll spend time with residents either one-to-one or in small groups, building meaningful connections and sharing enjoyable moments together.

You might:

  • Visit someone regularly for a chat and companionship.
  • Join or support small group activities.
  • Play games like Scrabble®.
  • Go for a gentle local walk.
  • Share a coffee and conversation.
  • Help with activities like music or sing-alongs.

Our residents really value these visits - they’re often the highlight of their week.

What skills will you need?

You don’t need any experience—just bring your time and a positive attitude. We’re looking for people who are:

  • Kind, patient, and friendly.
  • Good listeners who enjoy conversation.
  • Reliable and respectful.

Driving is not required for this role. However, if you choose to take a resident out in your car, you will need:

  • A full, valid driving licence
  • Appropriate motor insurance (you’ll just need to let your insurer know you’re volunteering - in most cases, volunteering is covered under social, domestic and pleasure use, and insurers should not increase premiums).

All our volunteers are required to complete an Enhanced DBS check. This is arranged by Southern Oaks is supported by references and other suitability checks.
