Do you enjoy driving and have a few hours to spare each week? Join Southern Oaks as a Volunteer Driver and help our residents get to important appointments safely and comfortably.

Southern Oaks is an independent, not-for-profit charity providing a range of independent and supported living at a choice of locations in North-East Surrey.

What you will be doing

As a Volunteer Driver, you’ll be helping residents get where they need to go - and making the journey enjoyable too. You’ll:
  • Pick residents up and drive them to appointments (GP, hospital, etc.).
  • Chat and offer friendly company along the way.
  • Sometimes wait with them during their appointment.
  • Bring them safely back home.
It’s a simple role, but it means a lot - your time can make someone’s day much easier and brighter.

What skills will you need?

You don’t need any special experience—just the right attitude. We’re looking for people who are:

  • Kind, patient, and reliable.
  • Happy to chat and keep someone company.
  • Confident drivers.

You’ll need

  • A full UK driving licence.
  • A safe, roadworthy 4-door car with a valid MOT.
  • Valid insurance (you’ll just need to let your insurer know you’re volunteering - in most cases, volunteering is covered under social, domestic and pleasure use, and insurers should not increase premiums).
  • A willingness to drive safely and responsibly.
  • To let us know about any motoring offences.

All our volunteers are required to complete an Enhanced DBS check. This is arranged by Southern Oaks is supported by references and other suitability checks.

What's the time commitment and where? 

Time commitment

Daytime weekdays flexible. Duration depends on the type of appointment and where it is but typically a couple of hours.
