Helping with Older People's Group - Sangam Group

Do you enjoy spending time with older people? Help run our friendly Monday sessions by setting up, making drinks, running activities and giving everyone a warm welcome in a fun, social space.

About the Organisation

For over 25 years, the Sangam Group in Sutton has been bringing older residents together — creating a welcoming space for friendship, fun, and new connections.

What you will be doing

Sangam is a Sanskrit word that means ‘a meeting place where rivers from all directions merge’. So, it’s fitting that the group welcomes people from different communities to gather under one roof, and as their Chair, Nali Patel says “It is vital for older people to get together, share food and friendship to feel less isolated. We are part of the Sangam family and look after each other.”

Sangam provide light exercise classes, talks on health issues, social events and trips out. Members celebrate festivals including Eid, Christmas and Diwali and enjoy summer seaside trips.

We are looking for a fit and friendly volunteer to help us run our weekly Monday sessions: Tasks include:

  • Making tea and coffee.
  • Handing tea and coffee to older less mobile members.
  • Helping move tables and chairs.
  • Taking food to the members.
  • Be a friendly face to talk to the members and help them feel comfortable, a group befriender.
  • Provide simple assistance for activities like chair yoga and bingo, if needed.

What's in it for you?

  • Gain valuable experience working directly with older people — developing empathy, patience, and strong communication skills.
  • Learn how to support inclusive group activities and create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Be part of a friendly, supportive community group with over 25 years’ history.
  • Enjoy the reward of reducing loneliness and seeing the positive difference you make every week.
  • Be part of f our celebrations of religious festivals, our annual seaside trip and any other fun activities we take part in.

What skills will you need?

  • Warm, friendly communication skills.
  • Teamwork and reliability.
  • Practical skills for setting up and serving.
  • Patience and empathy when working with older people.
