Front of House Volunteer - Cancer Information and Support Centres (Epsom & St Helier)

We are looking for 2 dedicated Front of House Volunteers to provide the first point of contact for the general public visiting or contacting The Cancer Information and Support Centre at St Helier Hospital.

About the Organisation

Our Cancer Information and Support Centres at both Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospical provide information and support to anyone affected by cancer, and those who are worried about the risks of cancer.

What you will be doing

  • Receive visitors and accept telephone calls
  • Direct enquiries to the appropriate person
  • Help the Centre Manager with appropriate tasks
  • Make appointments for complementary therapies (where appropriate)
  • Replenish literature in information boards around the hospital

What's in it for you?

This is a very rewarding role where volunteers are offering a friendly face to help put the cancer patient at ease when they come to the centre. The training that volunteers do can help within their personal life and their own learning and development. Volunteers are part of a team and contribute greatly to the Centre.

Our mandatory induction and training covers:
  • Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust mandatory training (online)
  • Face-to-face training on listening and responding skills training, cancer awareness training and a general induction training for the centres

All training has to be completed before starting as a volunteer. There is a three month probation period, after which there will be a discussion with Centre Manager to see how things have gone.

What skills will you need?

  • Be reliable and flexible
  • Be polite and helpful
  • Be friendly and approachable
  • Have good listening and communication skills
  • Be organised

All Front of House Volunteers are required to have a DBS check (organised and funded by us) as they work with a very vulnerable client group.

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment
We ask for half a day commitment on Thursday afternoons for regular shifts and shifts for occasional cover to cover when the regular volunteer is off.

Role Address
Cancer Information and Support Centre Springall Unit, Block F (Ferguson House), St Helier Hospital, Wrythe Lane, Carshalton, Surrey, SM5 1AA
