Befriending & Supportive Listening / onsite Companion Volunteer - The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

Are you available for 2 or 3 hours a week to be a Befriending & Supportive Listening Volunteer? As a Befriending volunteer you will offer a weekly telephone call to provide supportive listening to patients and /or companion visits for patient attending appointments /clinics on their own. Patients will have been referred by our psychological services team or clinical teams for those in their care that may need some extra for support.

What you will be doing

Key tasks may include the following:
 
• Making telephone contact with a specified service user
• Befriending a service user by attending RMH appointments as and when required.
• Communicating and listening to patients
• Maintaining boundaries and confidentiality
• Providing relevant, timely information and signposting to local community services
• Recognising & appropriately escalating concerns

What skills will you need?

Minimum age 25+. You will need patience and understanding for people attending treatment who need some extra support during their cancer journey. You will also need to be able to engage with people of all ages with confidence and have emotional resilience.

All training will be provided.

You will need to complete our short e-learning modules, an induction and orientation session, a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, and any other mandatory training required by The Royal Marsden.

An additional short virtual training session focused on Befriending and Supportive Listening will also be mandatory. 

Inclusive volunteering: This is taken on individual basis and can be discussed at interview. 

 

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment
Flexible shifts Monday - Friday (Sutton-based for in person assignments, or supporting both Sutton and Chelsea remotely).
