About the Organisation
Kingston Advocacy Group is a not-for-profit charity that helps vulnerable people have a say in decisions that affect them and how they live their lives. We do this by providing independent advocacy support at no direct cost to individuals. Advocacy is provided by our specialist employed staff and trained volunteers.
What you will be doing
Key responsibilities:
- To attend a police station as an appropriate adult for the vulnerable individual.
- Ensure the individual understands their rights and procedures taking place.
- Facilitate communication between individuals and police.
- Ensure the interviews and other procedures comply with legal requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Be available on a flexible, on call basis.
- Attend police station promptly when requested.
Your goal is to make sure detainees understand the questions, they are fit to continue questioning and that they are treated fairly.

As an appropriate adult, you will support vulnerable persons with different needs during police interviews and custody processes. Your presence ensures that they are treated fairly. You will support the detainee to understand what is going on and check their well being is ok.
What skills will you need?
Skills and qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Empathy, patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Understanding and willingness to learn.
Support and Training:
- Full training will be provided, covering relevant laws, procedures and best practices.
- Ongoing support and access to resources to assist with the role.
What's the time commitment and where?
Time Commitment
Starts 9am-3pm and 3pm-9pm Monday to Friday
Role Address
The role will be based at Kingston Police Station, 5-7 High St, Kingston upon Thames KT1 1LB
