General Steward - Sutton Music Festival

Take the chance this November to see some remarkable performances of music and drama, as well as supporting the development of our talented young people.

About the Organisation

Sutton Music Festival is an annual celebration of music and drama attracting entries from over 670 people. It is held over three weekends in November, followed by a Prizewinners' concert.

What you will be doing

The Festival generally runs on Friday evenings, all day Saturday (including the evening), and Sunday afternoon and evening. Up to 100 entrants and 10 volunteers could be present at the Festival at any one time. A large number of our entrants are children and young people with their parents. A Masterclass is held in the following spring.

The duties may include setting up and closing down at the beginning and end of each day - i.e. putting up signage and posters; registering entrants when they arrive; collecting admission fees and selling programmes; and serving refreshments.

Volunteers work as part of a team, and help and support is provided. The role is required for Friday evenings and Saturday/ Sundays, during the Festival, which takes place each year in November. Stewards volunteer for as many sessions as they wish, (a session being a morning, afternoon or evening).

What's in it for you?

This role will especially appeal to volunteers who are interested in (mainly) classical music and speech and drama, and who want to see these arts flourish in Sutton. There are opportunities to watch performances by some highly gifted young (and older!) entrants.

What skills will you need?

Volunteers need to be able to pick the tasks up quickly, get on well with others and be mutually supportive. Good communications skills are needed, together with a cheerful disposition, for greeting the Festival entrants, making them feel welcome and registering them.

What's the time commitment and where?

Time commitment:

You can volunteer for one or more sessions during the Festival weekends in November. Each session runs for three hours and we ask volunteers to report 30 minutes beforehand.

Location:

Most classes are held at Overton Grange School (Stanley Road, Sutton, SM2 6TQ), with additional classes at Holy Trinity Church, Wallington (Maldon Rd, Wallington SM6 8BL) and Homefield School, Sutton (Western Rd, Sutton SM1 2TE)
