Refreshments Volunteer at the Ukraine Saturday ‘School’ – Volunteer Centre Sutton

Volunteer at the Ukraine Saturday ‘School’: prepare refreshments, meet families and enjoy a rewarding role at the heart of a vibrant community preserving culture, language, and togetherness in Sutton.

About the Organisation

Volunteer Centre Sutton’s Ukraine support project welcomes, and supports the integration of, Ukrainian families, children and adults who have arrived in Sutton since the war started.

What you will be doing

Since October 2022, the Ukraine Saturday ‘School’ has been a cornerstone of support for local Ukrainian families. Each week around 60 children and their parents come together to learn, share traditions, and build community.

While the children take part in classes that help them maintain their language and culture, many parents stay for the morning to connect with one another. Offering refreshments is a simple but important part of creating this welcoming space.

As a Refreshments Volunteer, you will:

  • Prepare tea, coffee, biscuits, and squash for parents and children.
  • Serve refreshments throughout the morning with a friendly smile.
  • Help tidy up and pack everything away at the end of the session.

Your role helps families feel at home and ensures the ‘school’ continues to be a warm, supportive hub for the Ukrainian community.

What's in it for you?

  • Join a warm, welcoming team at the heart of Sutton’s Ukrainian community.
  • Experience the unique spirit of the ‘school’—from singing the Ukrainian national anthem to celebrating holidays, sharing food, music, art, and traditions.
  • Discover and learn about Ukrainian culture, language, history, and customs while building meaningful connections with families.

What skills will you need?

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

  • Friendly, approachable, and enjoy spending time with children and families.
  • Reliable and happy to be part of a supportive team.
  • Willing to get stuck in with simple but important tasks that help the ‘school’ run smoothly.

A DBS check is required for this role.

What's the time commitment and where?

Time Commitment:

The Ukraine Saturday ‘School’ takes place every Saturday morning during term time. Volunteers arrive by 9.30am to help prepare refreshments and usually finish by 1pm after tidying up. On special occasions, sessions may run a little longer.

We’re building a team of regular volunteers to share the rota, so you don’t need to commit to every Saturday—just enough to help us keep things running smoothly.

Location:

Christ Church Sutton, Christchurch Park, Sutton SM2 5TN
