About the Organisation
Volunteer Centre Sutton is a local charity dedicated to supporting and promoting volunteering across the London Borough of Sutton. We help local people find the volunteer role that best matches their skills, interests, and availability, while also supporting charities, organisations, and community groups to develop strong volunteer programmes. We also run a number of our own volunteer-led projects, all with the aim of building better lives through volunteering.
What you will be doing
Since October 2022, the Ukraine Saturday ‘School’ has been a cornerstone of support for local Ukrainian families. Each week around 60 children and their parents come together to learn, share traditions, and build community.
While the children take part in classes that help them maintain their language and culture, many parents stay for the morning to connect with one another. Offering refreshments is a simple but important part of creating this welcoming space.
As a Refreshments Volunteer, you will:
- Prepare tea, coffee, biscuits, and squash for parents and children.
- Serve refreshments throughout the morning with a friendly smile.
- Help tidy up and pack everything away at the end of the session.
Your role helps families feel at home and ensures the ‘school’ continues to be a warm, supportive hub for the Ukrainian community.
What's in it for you?
- Join a warm, welcoming team at the heart of Sutton’s Ukrainian community.
- Experience the unique spirit of the ‘school’—from singing the Ukrainian national anthem to celebrating holidays, sharing food, music, art, and traditions.
- Discover and learn about Ukrainian culture, language, history, and customs while building meaningful connections with families.
What skills will you need?
We’re looking for volunteers who are:
- Friendly, approachable, and enjoy spending time with children and families.
- Reliable and happy to be part of a supportive team.
- Willing to get stuck in with simple but important tasks that help the ‘school’ run smoothly.
A DBS check is required for this role.
What's the time commitment and where?
We’re building a team of regular volunteers to share the rota, so you don’t need to commit to every Saturday—just enough to help us keep things running smoothly.
Christ Church Sutton, Christchurch Park, Sutton SM2 5TN
