Walking Group Leaders - Sutton Befrienders (Volunteer Centre Sutton)

Join Sutton Befrienders as a Walking Group Leader – share your love of walking, support others to stay active, build friendships, explore the outdoors, and enjoy community connection.

About the Organisation

Sutton Befrienders aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness for older people and adults with support needs living in the London Borough of Sutton. We do this through matching vetted and trained volunteers with people who have little or no social connections and regard themselves as lonely. As well as providing one to one support, we run a wide range of group activities tailored to their needs.

What you will be doing

As a Walking Group Leader with Sutton Befrienders, you will:

  • Plan and check routes to ensure they are safe and enjoyable.
  • Welcome and support walkers, helping new participants feel included.
  • Lead and manage group walks, often alongside another leader or assistant.
  • Complete simple paperwork such as registration forms and attendance records.
  • Help deal with any issues that arise during walks, with support from your coordinator.
  • Attend occasional leader meetings and refresher training.
  • Support your coordinator by helping to develop and risk-assess new walking routes when needed.
  • Represent Volunteer Centre Sutton and follow its policies and procedures.

What's in it for you?

  • Full training and ongoing support to build confidence and skills.
  • Meet new people, make friends, and connect with like-minded volunteers.
  • Discover and explore your local area while enjoying the outdoors.
  • Improve your own physical activity and wellbeing.
  • Make a real difference by helping others stay active, healthy, and socially connected.

What skills will you need?

The main skill we need from our volunteer walk leaders is enthusiasm for walking and its benefits! In addition, we love our volunteers to be:

  • Friendly, welcoming and have good communication skills.
  • Observant and sensitive to the needs of others.
  • Knowledgeable about the basics of the benefits of walking and physical activity.
  • Reliable, punctual and well-organised.
  • Able to act independently but with guidance and support.
  • Confident at speaking in front of small groups.
