About the Organisation

Sutton Vision is a local charity offering information, advice and support to anyone affected by sight loss in the London Borough of Sutton. We provide a tailored package of support that can include help navigating treatment options, employment support, help with benefits and forms, advice on technical aids and a range of adapted social activities to alleviate isolation.

Volunteers are vital to our services, supporting activities, befriending and our team. In our 60th anniversary year, Sutton Vision received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, recognising our outstanding support for visually impaired people.

What you will be doing

This is a new role which will support our Outreach and Information Officer in raising our profile in the borough so that we attract more of the 6,000 visually impaired people in Sutton to use our services and to attract more volunteers and funding, and to help us reach into more diverse communities and areas where engagement is low. Your responsibilities will include:

Profile raising talks

  • To reach out by phone or email to community organisations, schools, places of worship etc as directed and set up talks.
  • To attend and deliver talks tailored to the particular audience (children, older people etc).
  • To capture information and enquiries and bring those back to Sutton Vision.
  • To record details of the event on our database so we can track our relationship with the organisation.

Community Events

  • To represent Sutton Vision at community events, either supporting our Outreach and Information Officer or with another volunteer. This may include setting up stalls outdoors.
  • To be able to talk to members of the public about our work, about sight loss and about volunteering.
  • To capture information and enquiries and bring those back to Sutton Vision.
  • To record details of the event on our database so we can track our relationship with the organisation.

What skills will you need?

  • Warm & friendly approach.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Confident speaking in front of small groups.
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Honest and trustworthy.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Firsthand experience of sight loss not essential as training will be given.
  • References and a DBS check will be required for this role.
