What you will be doing
The Housing and Budgeting Support Volunteer will assist families participating in the Rebuild Project to strengthen their financial confidence and housing stability. The volunteer will provide practical, non-judgmental support to help families better understand their finances, access relevant housing support services, and develop sustainable budgeting habits. This role aims to empower families to make informed decisions about housing and money management, supporting them on their journey toward greater stability and independence.
- Support families to understand household budgeting and basic money management, either in their home, at a local library or other agreed community space.
- Assist families in creating simple, realistic household budgets.
- Help families identify ways to manage debts, reduce expenses, or increase financial resilience.
- Signpost families to appropriate housing advice, financial guidance services, and local support organisations.
- Provide encouragement and practical support to families experiencing housing or financial stress.
- Work collaboratively with the Rebuild Project team to ensure families receive coordinated support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of volunteer support sessions where required.

What skills will you need?
Volunteers do not need to be financial experts, but the following qualities are helpful:
- Good listening and communication skills
- Empathy and a non-judgmental approach
- Basic understanding of budgeting and household finances (training and tools provided)
- Confidence discussing practical matters such as bills, rent, and budgeting
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality
- Reliability and good organisational skills
- Experience in housing, finance, advice services, or community support is helpful but not essential as training will be provided.
We are required to undertake a DBS check for this role.
What's the time commitment and where?
Time Commitment:
We aim to offer support for 6 weeks - 2 hours per week, tailored to the families' needs.
Role Address:
Home visits take place within the London Borough of Sutton, with our welcoming office based at Alexandra Gardens Children's Resource Centre, Stanely Road, Carshalton SM5 4LJ.
