Looking for a rewarding way to spend your evenings? Become a Scout adult volunteer leader or helper to create opportunities for young people aged 4-18. Build your confidence, boost your wellbeing, learn new skills, and enjoy adventure, friendships and unforgettable experiences each week.

About the Organisation

Sutton Scouts is a vibrant local community where over 1,500 young people aged 4-18 take part in weekly adventures, building confidence, skills for life and friendships. Powered by passionate volunteers, we create fun, varied experiences that help young people grow - and make a real difference.

What you will be doing

Depending on your availability and preferences, we will match you with one of our 25 active Scout groups in the borough. Volunteering with Scouts is flexible. Its great if people can make a regular commitment to volunteer weekly but we don’t expect everyone to be available every week.

At Scouts volunteering is all about teamwork. You and your fellow adult volunteers work together to make each session, safe, fun and meaningful. Together you’ll:

  • Plan and help deliver weekly meetings and activities shaped by the views and ideas of young people.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive environment where every young person feels supported, valued and confident to join in.
  • Help set up and pack away equipment, keeping activities safe and well organised.
  • Be part of a team deliver a fantastic programme, including games, badges, and practical skills such as teamwork, first aid, leadership and outdoor skills.

You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved in trips, camps, and other events if you choose to.

What's in it for you?

One of the best things about being part of Sutton Scouts is the chance to try new things, open doors to new adventures and opportunities, and experience things you might not otherwise do—the adventure doesn’t stop just for young people. This can include activities like climbing, kayaking, and camping, local hikes and events, as well as unique experiences such as visiting a fire station, attending Trooping the Colour, or going to major attractions, sporting events, and large-scale Scout gatherings.

As a volunteer, you will also:

  • Build leadership and teamwork skills as part of a supportive team.
  • Make a real difference to young people in your community.
  • Access training and development opportunities.
  • Gain valuable experience for careers such as youth work, social work or teaching.
  • Meet new people, make new friends and have fun along the way.
  • Get outdoors and get stuck in.
  • Discover the rewarding impact of sharing your knowledge, skills, and life experiences with young people.
  • Try new things and challenge yourself.
  • Have reasonable out-of-pocket expenses covered.

What skills will you need?

No experience is necessary, as full training is provided for every role. However, a genuine enthusiasm for working with young people is important.

Scouts actively aim to make volunteering as inclusive as possible. Support is available to help volunteers take part, including adjustments for disabilities or additional needs. Roles can be shaped around availability, skills and confidence levels.

Our minimum age requirement for all adult volunteer leaders is 18.

Adult volunteers in Scouts are required to complete an Enhanced DBS check as part of the organisation’s safeguarding process. This is arranged through the Scouts’ own DBS system and is supported by references and other suitability checks.
