Youth Support Volunteer - MAPS Mentoring (Volunteer Centre Sutton)

MAPS Youth Support works with young adults in Sutton facing challenges or living with complex life circumstances. We match them with a dedicated Youth Support Volunteer who provides a safe, supportive space to listen, guide and encourage. MAPS Youth Support opens new opportunities, builds confidence and self-esteem and strengthens resilience. This new pathway supports young people aged 16-24 through a 12-week programme focused on achieving specific targets aimed at supporting engagement and participation in education, employment, training and life skills.

About the Organisation

Join MAPS (Mentoring, Advocacy & Peer Support) as a Youth Support Volunteer for young adults in Sutton who are facing challenges with finding or engaging in education, training, employment or other opportunities. Dedicating an hour a week can provide the guidance that they need to explore their full potential.

What you will be doing

  • Meet with a young person for an hour, every week for 12 weeks.
  • Explore opportunities with them around education, employment or increasing life skills.
  • In the community or dedicated office space.

What's in it for you?

You’ll receive full training and ongoing support from our team of MAPS Practitioners. Once matched with your young person, you’ll meet weekly for 12 weeks, at a time and place that works for you, with regular check-ins from your dedicated MAPS Practitioner. Together, you and your young person will meet to discuss the challenges identified and work through steps that they can take to help them to achieve their goals. 

Our training not only prepares you for your role as a Youth Support Volunteer but also gives you transferable skills valuable in many areas of life. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by young people.

Your training will cover:

  • Communication, listening, body language, and building rapport
  • Boundaries, confidentiality, and managing behaviour that challenges
  • Safeguarding
  • Bias and discrimination

As a Youth Support Volunteer you will be able to support and guide a vulnerable young person to access information and opportunities that will enable to better engage with education, employment, training and life skills - boosting their future success!

What skills will you need?

  • Positive adult role model for young people at all times.
  • Ability to develop relationships and build rapport.
  • Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Effective listening skills and a non-judgemental attitude.

What's the time commitment and where? 

Time Commitment:

One hour, per week for 12 weeks.

Location:

Dedicated office space in Wallington. Community spaces, such as coffee shops and libraries.
