About the Organisation
Refugee & Migrant Network Sutton (RMNS) offers friendship, advice and free ESOL classes to refugees, asylum seekers and newly settled migrants in the London Borough of Sutton.
What you will be doing
You will liaise with our team of ESOL teachers to help the parents complete worksheets and oral exercises with the aim of enabling them to join a regular class later in the term, once they are able to leave their children with our creche staff. Our creche is run by qualified early-years staff and experienced volunteers.
What's in it for you?
- Make a positive difference by supporting refugee and migrant parents to access English language teaching to improve their confidence and independence.
- Gain experience relevant to careers in education, ESOL, or community work.
- Develop communication, teaching support, and interpersonal skills.
"I have every admiration for adults of any age taking on a new language as it’s a huge task and it is so rewarding to see how much progress they make in just a term with our support before they move on to the next class." Cathy Baker, RMNS volunteer
What skills will you need?
- Ability to work in a relaxed environment with both adults and young children present.
- Patience, friendliness, and good communication skills.
- Flexible approach to problem solving.
- Preferably teaching experience or working as an assistant in an educational setting, although this is not essential.
