About the Organisation
WeSwim supports volunteer-led swimming clubs across London. Together, we empower adults with disabilities to get active, connect with others, and build lasting confidence. Being in water provides freedom for people with disabilities. The water takes your weight, eases pain, and opens up new ways to move.
What you will be doing
Supporting swimmers in the water, which can take many forms - guiding someone who is visually impaired, hanging out with people with learning disabilities or communication differences, helping people with a range of physical disabilities with floats or noodles. You don't need to be a swimming coach, just friendly and confident in water!
- Physically supporting swimmers in and out of the water
- Encouraging swimmers to help them achieve their goals
- Conversation and communication with disabled swimmers to build community
You will receive an induction training session, and task specific training will be provided to you as a volunteer.
What's in it for you?
Our sessions are incredibly rewarding both for swimmers and volunteers. Our aim is to create communities who come together to share in the joy of swimming, which results in many volunteers telling us that their time with us is the "highlight of their week". In fact, 61% of volunteers report an improvement in their mental wellbeing, 85% of volunteers said their sense of purpose has increased, and 87% feel more connection to their local community.
What skills will you need?
- You don't need to be a swimming coach, just comfortable and confident in water.
- You have a friendly and enthusiastic manner and enjoy working with people.
- We proactively support diversity, in all its forms, and welcome applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. We welcome applications from disabled people.
We will undertake a DBS check for this role.
