About the Organisation
Oaks Park High School, Carshalton (part of the CAN Trust) is an inclusive and caring high school, proud to serve the local community. Our goal is to help young people develop the skills, knowledge and qualifications they need to become successful and confident adults. Governors play an important role in the school, acting as a critical friend to the headteacher and providing strategic direction.
What you will be doing
Core duties focus on strategic oversight, accountability, and financial management to ensure the best possible education for pupils.
The local governing body typically meets once per half term in the early evening. Training is provided and would be part of the induction process. New governors are also assigned a buddy to ease them into the role.
Typical tasks include:
- Attending governing body meetings.
- Taking on a link governor role, i.e for a subject or area of scrutiny within the school improvement plan (behaviour, attendance, careers etc).
- Attending training courses, as required.
- Sitting on panels, such as exclusions, complaints.
We are particularly looking for members of the local community with HR experience, who do not have a child at the school.
What's in it for you?
This role gives you the opportunity to give something back to the community as well as building new skills such as strategic leadership, budgeting, and problem solving, as well as shaping the educational outcomes of local children.

- Be prepared to volunteer the time commitment required.

What's the time commitment and where?
Time Commitment:
The Governor role is rewarding and interesting in equal measure and need not place major demands on your time. Typically, there are 1 or 2 meetings each half term which are usually held in the early evening. It is helpful if governors can make the occasional day time visit, but this is not essential.
