Chair of Trustees - Refugee & Migrant Network Sutton (RMNS)

We are looking for a strategic leader who can lead and develop the organisation for the future. Providing support to the staff and volunteer teams and leading the board of Trustees.

About the Organisation

Refugee & Migrant Network Sutton (RMNS) offers friendship, advice, and English language classes to refugees, asylum seekers and newly settled migrants. 

What you will be doing

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual with proven leadership skills to lead our board of Trustees as Chair. (We are also recruiting for new Trustees to join our board - read more here)

We are looking to better reflect the experiences of our local community, our clients and students and welcome applicants with lived experience of migration to the UK. We also would like to hear from people who can bring skills and expertise in the following areas – funding bid writing, mental health, IT and media. 

As the Chair of Trustees, and supported by a strong board (currently nine members), your key responsibilities are:
 
  • Leading the board - chairing board meetings, setting agendas and ensuring discussions are productive.
  • Providing strategic oversight - helping the board focus on our mission, long-term strategy, and major risks.
  • Ensuring good governance - making sure the organisation complies with its legal and fiduciary responsibilities and follows its governing documents and policies.
  • Support fundraising and community engagement efforts.
  • Contribute your skills and expertise to enhance our impact.

What skills will you need?

You will be good at working with others, ready to speak up and ask questions, thoughtful, open to learning and able to see the bigger picture. We welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences from our local community, clients and students. Ideally candidates will have:

  • Lived experience of migration to the UK.
  • A commitment to supporting refugees and migrants.
  • Experience in one of more areas such as fundraising, media, IT, mental health, education, community development.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A willingness to dedicate time and energy to this volunteer role.

We are a welcoming team who would like to hear from you. We offer training and support for new trustees and an informal chat before interview.

18+ only. Candiates must be prepared to undertake a DBS check.

What's the time commitment and where? 

Time commitment:

Depending on involvement in other activities but you should allow ten hours per quarter for preparation, attendance and follow up from trustee meetings. 

Location:

Sutton, London. Work online and at locations with access.
