Volunteering if you are under 18

You don’t have to wait until you’re 18 to start volunteering! There are lots of opportunities for young people, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

Safety first: Organisations want to make sure everyone is safe and supported, so some roles may have limits on tasks, hours, or require a parent or guardian’s permission.

Most roles for under-18s are designed to be fun, safe, and a great way to:

  • Learn new skills

  • Meet new people

  • Make a difference in your community

When you apply through the Volunteer Hub, the organisation will explain any rules or requirements so you know exactly what to expect.

If you are looking for work experience or a work placement, this is different to volunteering and you will need to apply directly to the organisations are you interested in. Find out more...

Check the role details

Always read the role description carefully, especially the age range.

Pro tip: Use the “suitable for under 18s” filter on the Volunteer Hub to find roles for your age. Don’t forget to include your age when filling in the form or sending a message.

Top Tips for Young Volunteers

  1. Plan around school: Many roles happen during the day. Look for after-school, evening, or weekend opportunities. School holidays are also a great time to volunteer!

  2. Ask questions: If you’re unsure about a role, ask the organisation—they’re happy to explain.

  3. Be honest about your age: Some roles have age limits for safety reasons, so always tell the truth.

  4. Get support if needed: Some roles may require a parent or guardian to be involved—this keeps volunteering safe and fun.

  5. Enjoy yourself: Volunteering is a chance to make friends, gain skills, and help your community. Try new things and have fun!
