A Season of Learning, Creativity and Community for Sutton’s Ukrainian Community

The autumn–winter period of 2025 was a vibrant and inspiring time for the Ukrainian community, marked by learning, creativity and shared achievements that brought people together across generations.

In October, community members were delighted to welcome Ms Tetiana, a GP trainee from Ukraine, who led an informative session on “Ageing Well.” The session covered disease prevention, essential health checks, vaccinations, and how to communicate effectively with a GP in the UK healthcare system.

“It was so useful to learn which tests we should have here in the UK,” participant. “Ms Tetiana’s advice will help us take better care of our health every day.”

November brought exciting opportunities for young people. The youth club organised its first ever off-site session, a bowling trip that encouraged teamwork, confidence and mutual support. Children played enthusiastically, celebrated each other’s successes and learned to accept losses with positivity.

“I loved how we all cheered for each other, even when someone didn’t win,” teenage attendee.

Also in November, children took part in an “Autumn Leaves in Watercolour” workshop at Christ Church. This special event was initiated by a local community artist, and the project proudly supported their free and enthusiastic idea. Participants explored colour mixing, autumn tones and creative expression, producing unique watercolour artworks.

“I really enjoyed painting the leaves and seeing everyone make something unique,” young participant.

Community spirit was also evident through environmental action, as volunteers came together to plant 30 trees in the Salvation Army Church Garden, including silver birches, rowans and wild cherry trees.

“Each tree is a symbol of life and hope, and it’s wonderful to see what we can achieve together,” said volunteer.

December was filled with festive warmth and cultural celebration. On 6 December, the Saturday school hosted a Christmas celebration where children met Saint Nicholas, sang carols and enjoyed a handmade crafts fair. Later in the month, Civic Carol Singing at Sutton Welsh Chapel on 11 December brought together the Ukrainian community and the wider local community. Attended by the Mayor of Sutton and Councillor Louise Filan, the event raised funds for Sutton Women’s Centre and Parkinson’s UK. Celebrations continued at the Salvation Army Church, with shared Bible readings and a strong sense of togetherness.

This season highlighted the power of collaboration between community members, volunteers and local partners — supporting learning, creativity, cultural traditions and unity. As one participant reflected:

“These events show that our community doesn’t just celebrate together — we support each other every day.”
