From Mentee to Mentor: Ethan Completes 20-Mile Kingston Breakfast Run for MAPS Mentoring

Former MAPS mentee Ethan ran 20 miles in Kingston to raise funds so more young people can access life-changing mentoring support.

On Sunday 8 March 2026, former MAPS mentee turned mentor and Volunteer Centre Sutton trustee Ethan completed an inspiring 20-mile challenge at the Kingston Breakfast Run, raising vital funds for the MAPS Mentoring programme.

The annual run in Kingston, which follows a scenic route along the Thames towpath and past Hampton Court Palace, has been held since 1998. For Ethan, however, the challenge was about far more than the distance.

Ethan was once a young person facing significant challenges. Growing up in care and struggling in education, he was unsure what the future might hold. That began to change when he joined the MAPS mentoring programme and was matched with a mentor who listened, believed in him and offered consistent support.

The impact of that relationship proved transformational. With encouragement and guidance, Ethan grew in confidence, developed resilience and began to see new possibilities for his future. Mentoring didn’t just help him overcome difficult moments — it helped him thrive.

Determined to give back, Ethan later trained as a mentor himself, supporting young people facing the same struggles he once experienced. Today, he is also one of the youngest trustees at Volunteer Centre Sutton, helping guide the organisation that once supported him.

By completing the 20-mile Kingston Breakfast Run, Ethan set out to raise funds so more young people can benefit from the same life-changing mentoring support.

Every mile represented the resilience, determination and belief that mentoring can help young people build.
