UKRAINE MAPS

MAPS Mentoring has been building confidence, raising aspirations and supporting young people for over 25 years. We support well over 100 young people annually in the London Borough of Sutton. The MAPS Mentoring Programme for Young People from Ukraine in Sutton was initiated to provide essential support and guidance to young individuals from Ukraine as they adapt to their new environment in the London Borough of Sutton.

Meet AK, a young Ukrainian Boy, recently settled in SuttonAK's story

Meet AK, an 11-year-old boy who has faced numerous challenges in his young life including a recent move from Ukraine to Sutton, following the devastating war in his home country. However, AK's life took a positive turn when he was paired with a young female Mentor through the MAPS Mentoring programme. The Mentor, who had also resettled in Sutton from overseas, shared her experiences of overcoming language barriers and adapting to new traditions and culture. This personal connection allowed AK's mother to place her trust in the Mentoring programme and embrace the opportunity it presented.

Building a strong Mentor relationship

AK's mentoring journey with his newfound friend has been nothing short of transformative. They meet regularly, connecting on a deep level. AK enthusiastically shares his experiences, stating:

"I enjoy meeting my mentor and talking to her when I'm feeling sad. It was especially comforting when my best friend from school moved away, and I was missing him." - AK

This connection proved invaluable during AK's recent school change, another stressful transition in his relatively short time in Sutton. AK acknowledges his Mentor's role in helping him navigate this period, saying,

"My Mentor helps me problem-solve when I have arguments and helps me stay calmer; she listens to me. Since we started meeting, I've explored new activities like tennis. We've also discovered hidden gems in Sutton together. It's special because my Mentor is discovering them for the first time too." - AK

Building confidence and aspirations

AK's Mentor has become a pivotal figure in his personal development and mental well being. After enduring a year marked by loss and trauma, alongside numerous transitions.

“Mentoring is really helping he is more relaxed and settled and is going to school more.” - AK’s mum

"It's incredibly fulfilling to witness AK's growth in confidence, especially in his communication skills. He's begun to openly discuss his feelings and has been proactive in making new friends. I believe AK is becoming more settled and optimistic about his future."  - AK’s Mentor

Helping AK develop life skills to overcome life’s challenges

In summary, AK's Mentoring relationship has provided him with a support system to cope with the challenges he has faced in recent times, including the upheaval of war and resettlement. His Mentor's ability to relate to his struggles, her willingness to listen, and their shared exploration of new activities and places have not only brightened AK's life but also bolstered his emotional resilience and communication skills.
