MAPS Mentoring Celebrates 30 Years of Changing Young Lives

MAPS Mentoring celebrates 30 years of one-to-one support, advocacy and peer guidance for vulnerable young people, marking a significant milestone in empowering Sutton’s next generation.

The celebration took place on 16 October 2025 at Unity Junction, St Nicholas Centre, bringing together over 65 guests, including volunteer mentors past and present, mentees, local dignitaries, children’s services representatives, trustees, and Volunteer Centre Sutton CEO, Anita Maulin.

The atmosphere was informal, inclusive, and uplifting — filled with laughter, reflection, and heartfelt stories. Guests enjoyed board games, table football, and MAPS-branded birthday cakes, all set against cheerful helium balloon displays celebrating three decades of community impact.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening came when Ethan and Meliska, two young people previously supported by the service, shared how MAPS had transformed their lives. They spoke openly about how having a trusted mentor boosted their confidence and helped shape their future — words that left a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

During the event, the team also launched the MAPS Social Value Report 2023–24 (link to page: vcsutton.org.uk/inspiration/maps-mentoring-proven-social/)  highlighting the long-term difference that mentoring makes to both mentees and volunteer mentors.

Guests described the evening as “inspirational,” “thought-provoking,” and “a true celebration of everything MAPS stands for.”

One attendee shared: “The young people were so inspirational — proof that MAPS really does have a positive impact. I feel privileged to be a small cog in this great machine.”

Another added: “It was such a lovely evening — so inspiring to hear the previous mentees talk. I feel so privileged to be part of the wonderful work MAPS does.”

Since its founding, MAPS Mentoring has empowered thousands of children and young people to reach their full potential through the steady support of a trusted adult role model. As the project looks ahead to the next decade, its mission remains the same — to ensure that every young person in Sutton has someone in their corner.

“One person can make a huge difference to a child or young person’s life,” said the MAPS team. “You could be that person — please get in touch if you’re interested in becoming a mentor.”
