Nurturing the Youngest
During the summer holidays, while the Saturday Ukrainian school was closed, our team, with the support of the Volunteer Centre, continued to run weekly sessions for children and families at Christ Church Sutton. The sessions for the youngest children, aged 0–7, became a lifeline, giving little ones the chance to hear Ukrainian, enjoy story time, and sing traditional songs. For many children—some just beginning to speak—this was a crucial way to preserve their language. Parents also valued these gatherings, finding connection and support at a time when nurseries and children’s centres were closed.
Creativity and Expression
Art classes for older children, from age 7 onwards, encouraged creative expression, collaboration, and sharing of ideas. These sessions helped children build confidence, strengthen friendships, and discover joy through creativity. It was particularly rewarding to see many teenagers join in, engaging with the community, supporting younger participants, and sharing their talents.
Together in Nature
On 16 July, families visited Deen City Farm, where children fed animals, enjoyed ice cream, and explored the farm environment. The day was filled with discovery and smiles, enjoyed by all ages—from the youngest to teenagers and older community members.
Later, families gathered in Manor Park for a community picnic celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day. Traditional games, music, food, and art activities brought everyone together, reinforcing connections and community spirit.
A Journey to the Sea
One of the summer’s highlights was a trip to Eastbourne and the Seven Sisters, with 47 community members joining the adventure. For many, it was their first opportunity to see the English seaside. Children ran freely in the fresh air, elderly members found rest by the sea, and everyone enjoyed laughter, sunshine, and a strong sense of togetherness.
Culmination at Christ Church Sutton
The summer reached its climax with a special event at Christ Church Sutton, bringing the Ukrainian community together in celebration and creativity. Everyone was welcome to perform, showcase their talents, and support others. Musicians from neighbouring Ukrainian communities also joined, giving attendees the chance to meet, strengthen connections, and share experiences with like-minded people.
The event included a charity lottery with prizes crafted by local artisans. Participants baked pastries, prepared sandwiches, and contributed to the day’s activities, uniting everyone as one big family. The event not only celebrated culture and talent but also aimed to support Ukraine, creating a warm and inclusive environment for all.
Community Feedback
Participants shared how meaningful these experiences were:
“The trip provided a refreshing break, allowing us to enjoy friends’ smiles, the sea breeze and warm sunshine while momentarily escaping daily worries. It reminded us of our beloved Ukrainian coastline, which many of us haven’t seen since the war began.”
“For Ukrainians, feeling support on the occasion of Independence Day is like a sip of water to someone suffering from thirst. We truly feel the care and support of Sutton Council.”
Thank you sincerely for arranging the wonderful trip to Eastbourne. It was a joyful day filled with kindness, fresh sea air, and beautiful memories. Your generosity brought happiness and hope to Ukrainians—we are deeply grateful.
Closing Reflection
This summer demonstrated the power of community, volunteering, and shared traditions. From weekly story times and art classes to farm visits, picnics, seaside trips, and culminating in a creative celebration at Christ Church Sutton, these experiences helped children preserve their language, supported adults in finding connection and rest, and strengthened bonds across the Ukrainian community in Sutton.
Volunteer Centre Sutton is proud to have organised these activities, bringing joy, hope, and unity to families throughout the summer.
