Young Commissioners: Young People Make History at Sutton Council Meeting Takeover

Young people took the lead at a London Borough of Sutton Local Committee Meeting on 19 June 2025

In a landmark moment for youth participation, young people took the lead at a London Borough of Sutton Local Committee Meeting on 19 June 2025, stepping into key leadership roles and making their voices count.

Inspired by the Young Commissioners’ stall before the Central Sutton Local Committee meeting in spring, Councillors developed this innovative idea.

As part of the borough’s first-ever Youth Takeover, young participants — including Young Commissioners from Volunteer Centre Sutton — ran the meeting from start to finish, taking on positions such as Chair, Vice Chair, and Note Takers. The event showcased the power of youth voice, with participants confidently leading discussions and sharing their perspectives on the issues that matter to them.

The evening began with passionate presentations from the Young Commissioners on the key topics of Mental Health, Safety, and Equality, highlighting the challenges young people face and the change they want to see.

The meeting also featured a celebration of creativity and activism. People Arise Now delivered a high-energy dance performance, while Sutton Young Carers ran an interactive quiz that brought fun and community spirit to the event. Students from Carshalton High School for Girls, joined by Paul Arthur from the T.L.E . Anti Racism Summit, spoke powerfully about the anti-racism work taking place in their school. We also heard from a student at Wallington County Grammar School and a young charity founder from The Percenters youth Charity.

Young attendees were particularly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and speaking passionately on issues they cared about — impressing Councillors and adults alike, and showing they’re ready to help shape the future of their borough.

This inspiring event was a testament to what happens when young people are given the platform to lead. It marked a significant step forward in youth engagement in Sutton — and a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where all voices can be heard.

Thank you to London Borough of Sutton for making this youth-led session possible and championing the voices of the next generation.
