About the Project
Sutton Befrienders aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness for older people and adults with support needs living in the London Borough of Sutton.
Through the support of dedicated volunteers, we help people build meaningful social connections, improve their wellbeing and remain active within their local community. Alongside one-to-one befriending, we offer a varied programme of group activities that provide opportunities to meet others, try new experiences and enjoy time together.
What We Do
Our volunteers provide friendship, companionship and encouragement to people who may have few social connections or be experiencing loneliness.
The project offers:
- One-to-one befriending through carefully matched volunteer Befrienders*
- Friendly conversation and regular social contact
- A varied programme of group activities and outings
- Walking groups and other community-based activities
- Opportunities to build confidence and reconnect with the local community
Our volunteers help create welcoming and inclusive environments where people feel valued, supported and less isolated.
*Please note that, due to current funding capacity, we are not able to accept new referrals for one-to-one befriending at this time. Referrals for group activities remain open.
How We Help
Sutton Befrienders helps people improve their wellbeing by reducing loneliness and increasing social connection.
All Befriending volunteers receive full training, including communication skills, confidentiality, risk assessment and safeguarding, before supporting participants. Volunteers also receive ongoing guidance and support from the Sutton Befrienders team.
Whether through a regular visit, a friendly conversation or participation in a group activity, our volunteers help people maintain independence, build confidence and feel more connected to their community.
