Afghan Women Build Confidence and Connection Through English Conversation Club

Weekly English conversation sessions are helping Afghan women improve language skills, build friendships, reduce isolation, and strengthen wellbeing in Sutton.

Volunteer Centre Sutton’s Afghan Project is helping Afghan women in Sutton build confidence, improve English language skills, and create meaningful social connections through a new weekly English Conversation Club.

The Afghan wellbeing sessions began on 19 May and have already seen three successful sessions, with approximately 11 Afghan women attending each week. The sessions, held every Tuesday at the Volunteer Centre Sutton office, are supported by six dedicated volunteers who help create a welcoming and encouraging environment for learning.

More than just language classes, the sessions provide a safe and supportive space where Afghan women can come together, connect with others, and feel part of a community. Through conversation, games, and interactive activities, participants can practise speaking and listening in English while growing in confidence week by week.

The impact has already been clear. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.

Nasima, Afghan Women’s Group Lead, said:

After each English conversation session, I always ask the women how they found the session, what they enjoyed, and what they learned. They consistently tell me the classes are very helpful for improving their English, but they also really value the time spent together and the positive impact it has on their mental wellbeing.

Nasima added:

One lady recently told me how much she enjoys the friendly atmosphere and how comfortable she feels coming to the sessions. Another was excited to share a new English word she had learned that day. It’s wonderful to see their confidence growing week by week.

Two participants shared their appreciation for one volunteer in particular, saying:

She is a very good teacher. Whenever I made a mistake, she kindly corrected me and helped me learn. I hope she can join us every Tuesday. Please let her know we really appreciated her support.

The English Conversation Club was designed not only to support language learning, but also to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing. For many Afghan women adjusting to life in the UK, being far from home can feel isolating. These sessions offer an important opportunity to socialise, build friendships, and feel supported within a welcoming community.

Volunteers have also found the experience deeply rewarding.

Bernie, one of the volunteers, said:

I am really enjoying getting to know these lovely ladies and learning more about their Afghan background and culture. It is a pleasure to share our UK culture and support them in developing their English language skills to help them integrate into our community.

Another volunteer, Jane, reflected on the connections formed during the sessions:

I very much enjoyed chatting with the lovely ladies from Afghanistan and look forward to seeing them again. The ladies I spoke to had a great sense of humour. They were laughing as they told stories about their mother-in-laws. I realised humour is universal.

Each weekly session lasts one hour, with an additional 30 minutes before and after to allow time for participants to settle in, socialise, and engage in informal conversation. This relaxed approach helps foster friendships, build confidence, and strengthen the supportive community atmosphere that makes the club so valuable.

As the sessions continue, the English Conversation Club is becoming much more than a place to learn a language—it is becoming a place of belonging, connection, and hope.
