Our Youth Engagement Lead Jenny, and Young Commissioner Leader Ela were delighted to have been invited to attend the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Meeting on Political Literacy by Shout Out UK following the Young Commissioners work on Voter Registration Week.
The meeting was co-chaired by Kim Leadbeater MP and Lord Iain McNicol and was an opportunity for the AAPG to share its work on improving political literacy for young people , encouraging young people to register to vote and the impact of voter identification requirements on future elections in this country.
Shout Out UK spoke about their 2021 report entitled ‘The Missing Link’, which examined the teaching of politics and political literacy in English schools: “The report concludes that democratic education exists as a peripheral feature of secondary education in England and is being delivered by non-specialists who neither feel prepared to teach it nor favour appropriate pedagogic practices.’’ (The Missing Link Report, 2021).
Youth Engagement Officer Jenny Batt said "It was fantastic to be invited to the APPG meeting at the Houses of Parliament and for the Young Commissioners to be involved with helping to improve political literacy. The Young Commissioners will stay involved with this work and look forward to attending future meetings of the APPG."
