Volunteer Centre Sutton arranged for the families we support to visit London Zoo. It was a warm sunny day with typical English spots of rain, but that didn’t deter the children from enjoying themselves seeking out the lions. They were most disappointed to find them asleep!
The children took charge and led the way following the map, this gave the adults the opportunity to catch up and talk of news from the U.K. and Afghanistan.
“Our children enjoyed running around navigating the zoo with the maps.”
The older children supervised the younger ones while they ran round the park looking for the penguins and monkeys. They loved the camels making noises while they chewed hay. The highlight for the younger children was the goat petting corner and stroking the relaxed goats. The spooky spider house proved surprisingly successful.
One of the mums brought some cooked food which was very generous of them, while the children enjoyed ice creams and fruit shoots. The children seemed to enjoy the ice cream more than the monkeys.
Everyone is looking forward to the next event which is a sports day and picnic in the local park, where we hope to encourage the mums and dads to race against the children. Thank you to The London Borough of Sutton’s Refugee Resettlement Team for the continued funding of the project.
