Supporting the Afghan Community in Sutton: funding extended to May 2024

Sutton Council has extended funding for our new project supporting the Afghan community in Sutton.

Sutton Council LogoIn 2023, Volunteer Centre Sutton received funding from Sutton Council to support Afghanistan nationals who had settled in the London Borough of Sutton.

We are delighted to announce that we have received a further six month’s funding from Sutton Council for this new project, which builds upon our work with the Hong Kong Community (Integrating Sutton) and the Ukraine Community, and aims to assist and ease the integration of new residents to the London Borough of Sutton.

Current support for the Afghan community takes the form of regular (typically fortnightly) sessions, workshops and meetings. Sessions have covered topics such as health, housing, education and employment and are often supported by external professionals.

Recently, we have been joined by Reed in Partnership for a session on employment, Encompass LATC for a session on housing and NHS South West London on healthcare in Sutton.

With further funding, we will be able to maintain and continue this vital work and will be able to expand to provide outreach visits with individual families and also meet with the female members of the community to give them tailored support.

If you have a connection with the Afghan community, or would like to get involved and find out more about this project, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sarah Henry at sarahhenry@vcsutton.org.uk.
