After being contacted by the resident's neighbour, Community Volunteer Squad Coordinator Kim visited the resident's home to remove and dispose of the old appliance before installing and setting up a new microwave. While the task may have seemed small, it was something the resident was unable to do independently and did not have family nearby to assist.
The support enabled the resident to continue living safely and independently in her own home while providing reassurance that help was available when needed.
Following the visit, the resident shared her appreciation:
"The volunteer was absolutely lovely, kind and helpful. Both me and my neighbor are extremely grateful to her – thank you so much."
The story highlights the important role that practical, community-based support can play in the lives of older and more isolated residents. Everyday tasks such as assembling furniture, changing lightbulbs, gardening, collecting prescriptions or installing household items can become difficult barriers for people who have limited support networks.
The Community Volunteer Squad connects local volunteers with Sutton residents who need help with one-off practical tasks. From DIY and gardening to driving and household support, volunteers provide timely assistance that helps residents remain independent, connected and supported within their community.
Over the past 12 months, Community Volunteer Squad volunteers have completed 322 tasks and supported 169 residents across the borough.
Reflecting on the visit, Kim said:
It was an absolute pleasure meeting these lovely ladies and being able to assist them in what seems like a very small way but knowing it made the world of difference to them was extremely rewarding.
Kim Biggs, Community Volunteer Squad Coordinator, added:
Having just started in this role I was really excited to give back to residents in my local community.
As demand for practical support continues to grow, the Community Volunteer Squad is always looking for new volunteers who want to make a positive difference in their local community. Volunteers choose when and how they help, making the role flexible, rewarding and easy to fit around other commitments.
Watch Darren share his experience of volunteering with the Community Volunteer Squad and the difference it makes to local residents:
