Anna and Jackie
Since joining Volunteer Centre Sutton's Community Volunteer Squad in March 2025, Jacky has become a valued member of the team, making a real difference to local people through his practical skills, kindness and willingness to help.
Originally from Hong Kong, Jacky moved to the UK a few years ago and works professionally in IT. Wanting to become part of his local community, improve his English and give something back, he signed up as a Squad volunteer.
In just over a year, Jacky has completed an impressive 25 volunteer tasks, contributing 51 hours of his time to support Sutton residents.
From taking cats to the vet for vaccinations and setting up printers to dismantling furniture, putting up blinds, gardening and taking rubbish to collection points, no task is too big or too small. His practical skills have helped many local people remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes.
Reflecting on why he decided to volunteer, Jacky said:
"I started to volunteer because I wanted to become familiar with my community in Sutton, practise my English communication with local people and contribute to my community."
For Jacky, the greatest reward is knowing that his time has made everyday life easier for people who needed support.
"I think those clients were waiting for help. My volunteer work can help them to continue their lives more easily."
Over the past year, Jacky has supported a wide range of residents, including a gentleman who was unable to take his cats to the vet, a single mother who needed help dismantling furniture, older residents requiring gardening and household assistance, and people who were unable to carry heavy rubbish bags to collection points.
His commitment and friendly approach have earned heartfelt praise from the people he has helped.
After Jacky and fellow volunteer Patrick helped Martha with gardening and moving heavy items, she said:
"Thank you so very much for the house and garden help. Jacky and Patrick were so nice and so willing to help. They worked so fast and efficiently that they even had time for a cuppa and a biscuit. I can't tell you how much I appreciated their help with jobs I could not have done myself. The garden looks fab now!"
Norma, who received help removing rubbish bags from her home, shared:
"I could not be more happy with this. The volunteer is quick, efficient and kind. As always, my grateful thanks to Jacky, and to the organisers."
Michael was equally grateful after Jacky set up his printer.
"Very pleased with Jacky. He was so professional, polite and his attention to detail was amazing. Thank you so much – it has made my life much, much easier. I am very grateful to him and Kim for organising."
Following a gardening visit, Monica also praised Jacky's hard work:
"Melly and Jacky done good job, worked very hard and gave me lots of support and help. I would love to have both in the future."
Jacky's story is a wonderful example of how volunteering benefits both the volunteer and the community. Through his generosity, practical skills and commitment, he has helped dozens of local people with everyday tasks that make a meaningful difference to their wellbeing and independence.
Thank you, Jacky, for everything you do. Your time, kindness and dedication are making Sutton a stronger, more connected community.
