For many people, being active is about more than exercise. It can provide an opportunity to get out of the house, meet others, improve wellbeing and feel part of a community.
Through its Walking Groups and Music and Movement sessions, Sutton Befrienders provides welcoming and accessible ways for people to become more active while making new friends.
Walking together, building friendships
Sutton Befrienders runs two regular walking groups, offering different levels of activity:
- Low-level social walks: Tuesdays, 10.30am, Beddington Park
- Walking for Health – moderate level: Thursdays, 10.30am, Nonsuch Park, Cheam
The friendly groups encourage people to get outdoors, walk at a comfortable pace and connect with others.
“This walking group has been amazing for me, it gets me out to have a chat with people. All of the walk leaders are lovely. I love Bridie, she is kind, considerate and will go out of her way to help people.”
Another participant said:
“Your service is invaluable. I suffer with mental health and depression, but the walk is of fantastic benefit to me, meeting all different interesting people of all ages.”
Walking groups provide a friendly and supportive way to get active, enjoy the outdoors and make new connections.
Music, movement and friendship
Music and Movement is a fun, low-impact dance class designed to be accessible to people of different ages and abilities. Sessions combine physical activity with music, followed by a cup of tea and time to socialise.
For participants, the sessions provide both an opportunity to get moving and a regular source of friendship and enjoyment.
“Since doing Music and Movement I have made new friends. I live on my own and sometimes feel quite down but after the class I feel so much better. In fact, I go home and say to myself, ‘I feel really happy today.’ Mary and Issy lift your spirits with their lovely personalities and enthusiasm.”
Another participant said:
“Gets me up and moving, plus Issy is so enthusiastic she cheers everyone up.”
Music and Movement combines accessible physical activity with music, fun and friendship.
Volunteers making a difference
Volunteer Mary brings her experience in musical theatre, dance teaching and physiotherapy to Music and Movement, helping older people stay active, build confidence and have fun.
In a video interview, Mary shares how she uses her experience and passion for movement to support participants and create an enjoyable, welcoming environment.
Together, Sutton Befrienders' activities show how making physical activity social, enjoyable and accessible can encourage people to move more while strengthening their connections with others.
For participants, a weekly walk or dance class can become an important part of their routine – helping them stay active, feel happier and connected to their community.
